In the court of Henry VIII, there are many secrets - and some people will kill to keep them hidden.
Susanna Dallet is the daughter of a Flemish painter and wife to a philandering husband, living in the court of Henry VIII. When her husband is murdered, Susanna is suddenly left with a household to provide for and nothing to her name. Her days of anonymity are over when Susanna finds that guild rules preventing women from working do not apply at the king's court, and she manages to secure a position as a miniature-portrait painter. Before long, she has not only made a name for herself, she is close to those who surround Princess Mary. But even in this lofty company, Susanna is not safe. An old manuscript that she has inherited turns out to hold the keys to an age-old mystery, and the forces that claimed her husband are closing in. As danger looms, Susanna joins with Robert Ashton, secretary to Henry's cunning and ruthless adviser Archbishop Wolsey, and together they must fight a fearsome society in league with a demon.
Combining heartpounding action, sly humor, romance, and supernatural twists, The Serpent Garden is the story of a creative and resourceful woman who unwittingly finds herself in a dangerous - and deadly - game of hide-and-seek.

This is my favorite of all Riley’s books, perhaps because the heroine is an artist like myself. Susana Dallet is left the widow of a painter at a time when artist Guilds didn’t allow women to paint no matter how talented they were. Since her husband was murdered when he was committing adultery, he was no loss.He also departed the world leaving Susana broke and with no means of supporting herself. On the advice of the widow (of another dead painter) downstairs, Susana finishes a commission taken by her dead husband, pretending his ghost came home and finished the work so she would have money for his funeral. The widow downstairs tells her that she has supported herself for several years by selling her dead husbands paintings of a naked Adam and Eve. However she is running out of them, so she suggests Susana paint more Adam and Eves adding miniatures by HER husband and they split the money. So Susana becomes two dead painters.
Her work draws the attention of Cardinal Worsley and hr recruits (blackmails) her to travel with King Henry VIII’s sister when she travels to France to marry it’s aging king.
This book is full of ironic humor, fun and adventure without straying from the mores existing at the time. There are plots, subplots, conspiracies; even one involving a conflict between the angel Hadrial (in charge of inspirations, arts and music —don’t ask) and a demon prince who is out to make as much trouble as he can while he fulfills-the last command put on him before he was imprisoned.
Don’t worry—Everything ends well.

The Serpent Garden (Audible Audio Edition) Judith Merkle Riley Alison Larkin Audible Studios Books Reviews
Loved it! Read all her books! Great reading satisfaction for me
Good pace great characters with a great plot. Enjoy
I love this book!! I have now read ALL of this author and I am positive I will read every one of them over and over again! She can spin a yarn with so many different colors...her heroines are spunky, humorous and so wonderful!! 5 out of 5 for sure!!!
Judith Merkle Riley writes wonderful historical fiction. Each book is a treasure of humor and history and an angel or two. Check out all of her books. It is with great regret that she has died.
I purchased this book based on the positive reviews, and it was a pleasant read. There is a lot happening in this book- the spunky artist heroine and her struggle to survive annd her romance with our intrepid hero. In addition there is Da Vinci code like story line with a Prior of Sion group who are out to get her and restore the Merovingian kings to the throne of France. Besides this there is a villain who brings forth a demon and the angel Hadriel who battles the demon and helps our heroine. Plus there is the story of Mary Tudor and her marriage to the King of France and the successsion battle after he dies! Personally I think the author could have cut out one or two of these story arcs to make for a tighter read. Nonethless it was pleasant and I really like our heroine Suzanne and the Hero Robert Ashton. I will try some more of this authors books.
This was my second Judith Merkle Riley book to read-- having read The Oracle Glass first. I thought that the story was plausible but... be prepared for angels and demons to be living and breathing in the story.
The heroine of the story, Susanna Dallet is a quick witted, strong, talented court painter in Henry VIII's court. The facts/details included in the story about the methods of painting-- preparation of paints and tools was fascinating and I thourghly enjoyed this information.
The supernatural, fantasy characters were farfetched--confusing at times, but not totally ridiculous as both the good and evil 'beings' did have their own humourous charm.
If you like fantasy stories and can let your imagination just let go and run w/the fantasy created-- then this book is for you. I had a hard time accomplishing this while reading the book.
There isn't anyone who writes like Judith Merkle Riley. She is without a doubt one of the clearest voices I've ever read. Her characters are full bodied, secondary characters only slightly less so. Motivations in a court are explained and understood. Love the historical time period details. I have read everything she has written. Her work has good bit of the metaphysical and I find that intriguing; it adds an element that few would dare to try. She does and pulls it off well - God always wins.
In spite of hearing great things about her witty historical fiction (with a dash of fantasy) I never read anything by Judith Merkle Riley until today. I should never have waited so long.
This is an almost perfect novel. It has history, about Henry VIII's little sisters marriage to the king of France, mystery, in the shape of a secret priory of noble men keeping a secret about the "true royal blood of France" romance, and a spunky main character with a real personality. You'll even pick up on something (a very common theme in historical fiction actually, especially with the Cathers) that has come into the spotlight lately.
There's not much that needs to be said beyond that. This is a quirky, quick uplifting read that should enchant lovers of both historical fiction and fantasy. The main character, Susanna, a plucky and very talented woman painter who must shift for herself when her no good husband is murdered because of a secret manuscript and a locked up demon, is someone that you'll love instantly.
It is not a book to be taken seriously, but is purely a novel that provides novel entertainment. Perfect for summer reading. I polished it off in about a day and have allready ordered more of the authors books.
Four stars.
