Nothing ruins a first date like a kidnapping and learning you're the Mayan god destined to destroy the world.
Pakál, raised in the U.S. by his refugee mother, ignores the Mexican kids who taunt him for being Indio and the Anglo kids who shun him. He stoically pursues his version of the American dream – a good college, a law degree, and enough money to support his mother and marry the gringo girl of his dreams. Unfortunately, he is the incarnation of the Mayan god Nohochacum, and it is his job to battle the serpent of avarice in a one-on-one smack down that will cause the end of the world on Dec. 21st, 2012. Not all gods think it’s a good idea to end the world (and give up the worshipers that will end with it). Pakál must deal with his mother’s past, his family demons (divine and human), and a pantheon of gods unlike anything the U.S. school system ever suggested possible. In the end, he must accept his mythic nature, duty, and family in order to overcome the serpent of avarice and set the world on a path that will avert disaster at the end of the Mayan calendar.

Eric Witchey's amazingly well-researched novel deals with the way the wheels of time turn, blending modern day with myth, with youth and old age, with this culture and the ancient one. An excellent, exciting read with great implications for what the Mayans say about 2012.
If you're worried about the Mayan end of the world prediction coming true this December, I suggest you read Beyond the Serpent's Heart. It brings us young adult characters straddling a barbed-wire fence and reaching, sometimes far beyond their stretch, to touch the ground on both sides between a modern and ancient world. It is done in such a believable and compelling way that you forget that the stakes are nothing less than the obliteration of life as we know it. Or do You? In the back of my mind, all the time I was reading Serpent's Heart, I was encouraging the protagonist Pakál to wise up, get some chutzpah, and take on the IxChup, the evil moon Goddess, else all is lost. The tension kept building and I kept reading.
I've got to admit, at first I stumbled over all the Mayan names but once I got used to them it added a certain exotic and arcane flavor to the narrative. Almost like I was understanding a forgotten language, as, indeed, I was discovering a forgotten world.
Speaking of language, I appreciate the unsentimental, down to earth narrator style guiding the story along, contrasting sometimes with the eloquent, almost Shakespearian (like the TV series Deadwood), dialogue of its characters, particularly the Gods and Goddesses. I found this semantic device to mirror the metaphoric contrast between the new world and the old. Nice trick as well as high art.
I don't know if the author has plans for a sequel, but this reviewer for one would certainly devour another book in the series. An entertaining way to learn a little bit of history with some mythology thrown in for a kicker. Okay, okay . . . if you don't need any more learning in your life--history or mythology--read it for a wonderful story that'll do too.
